I guess I am a little confused as to what kind of threat level that mesh is supposed to stop. The mesh over trenches is especially confusing, as one would think that creates an ideal airburst.

Actually my grandfather on my fathers side served in both wars.
I don't know if he has been a machine gunner though. Since he passed a few years befor I was born.
