Not quite that straightforward. See the .50 cal M21 "Headlight" tracer, specifically developed and introduced in 1943 for use by USAAF bomber crewmen. Combat reports had indicated that tracers fired at attacking Luftwaffe fighters could cause them to flinch away. So the M21 was designed to be a very bright tracer clearly visible from the front even in daylight.
