After reading so many positive reviews about the game I took the plunge and ordered the 1962 season.  I've tried to get card sets for each season in which the "modern" Giants have been in the World Series and 1962 was the one season I wasn't able to get through Strat so this was perfect.  With any new season my first order of business is always the Durocher Cup, a 9 game series between the Giants and Dodgers.  I patterned it after the Ryder Cup with each game representing a hole so to speak, and initially played 18 games but shortened it to 9 games a few years back.  Because of that match-play/golf tie-in I needed a way to halve a hole, thus there are no extra innings with this project.  Game ends after 9 regardless of score.  Makes for some unique situations when closers are brought in to protect a tie rather than a lead.  Without further ado, let the 1962 Durocher Cup begin!

Drysdale goes the distance in game 1 victory

Quite the first game matchup as Juan Marichal faced off against Don Drysdale.  It didn't take long for league MVP Maury Wills to make an impact on the game.  He led off the game with a single, promptly stole second base (he stole 104 bags in '62) and scored on a Tommy Davis single.  Larry Burright's solo homer in the second made it 2-0, but the Giants got one back when Jim Gilliam booted a grounder with the bases loaded.  L.A. would break it open in the fourth as they got to Marichal for 2 more long shots and scored 3 in the inning.  Drysdale wasn't going to relinquish that lead and the Dodgers take a 1-0 series lead.

Sanford tosses shutout as Giants level series

Jack Sanford went the distance, shutting out the Dodgers on 5 hits as the Giants evened things up in the Durocher Cup.  Sandy Koufax struck out 12 in his 8 innings of work, but was undone by the long ball, giving up 2 dingers.  Orlando Cepeda led the way offensively for San Francisco with 2 hits including a homer and a stolen base.

Good stuff. A Larry Burright HR? Sure you weren't expecting that. I assume that was off a 65 roll with a low d20 roll? 1962 Drysdale was really good. Marichal, not as good as he would become.

Yep, 65 roll and Marichal gives up a few bombs.  Even Burright's (-1) couldn't prevent it.

McCovey, Cepeda provide key hits in Giants victory

A two-run single by Willie McCovey, followed by a two-run double by Orlando Cepeda, were the perfect answer to back to back homers by the Dodgers as San Francisco took both games in San Francisco before the Cup returns to L.A. Willie Mays chipped in with 2 more hits and a stolen base as he continues to torment Dodger pitching.

Fairly powers Dodgers to victory

Ron Fairly had a big day at the plate with a 2-run double and a solo home run, his second of the Cup.  Don Drysdale once again out-dueled Juan Marichal with his second complete game, striking out 8.  HIs only blemish was allowing a two-run blast to Orlando Cepeda, who's now tied with Fairly for the Cup lead with two.  Marichal proved to be his own undoing, committing two errors in the 3rd that allowed the Dodgers to plate two runs.  Cepeda's homer tied the game a half inning later, but 3 straight singles in the 5th gave L.A. a lead they would not relinquish.

Tommy Davis' two-out single scored Maury Wills from second in the bottom of the ninth as the Dodgers tied up the Durocher Cup at 3 games a piece.  Wills led off the ninth with his 3rd single of the game and promptly stole second.  Jim Gilliam and Willie Davis failed to advance him against Giants reliever Stu Miller, but Tommy Davis was up to the task with a clean single to center.
