Winner take all!

Image result for haller 1962 giants

Tom Haller blasted two home runs, Jim Davenport added one of his own, and the Giants cruised to an 8-3 win to set up a winner take all game 9 back in Los Angeles.  It will be the third matchup of Drysdale and Marichal, can't really ask for much more than that.  Interesting tidbit: O'Dell's error in the third was the 6th committed by Giants pitching in the series.

Not so fast ...

José Pagán's bases loaded, bases clearing double in the top of the ninth capped a 4 run Giants rally and gave us a historic first as the game ended in a 5-5 tie.  For the first time in Durocher Cup history there will be an extra 10th game to determine the winner.  I had actually never considered what would happen if the Cup itself ended in a tie so this decision was made on the fly.  At first I was going to do extra innings in this one, but in the spirit of golf from which this project was inspired, I decided to go with the US Open, play the entire thing again solution and go with a game 10.  The fans will only remember the collapse at the end, but Don Drysdale was really magnificent for most of this one.  He had only allowed 3 hits and 2 walks leading up to the ninth, and even when he loaded the bases with 2 more walks and a single, he had managed 2 outs and had a four run lead so I left him in.  An RBI single by Tom Haller, followed by Pagán's heroics, and we're heading north for an extra game in San Francisco.  What a series!

Champs!

Frank Howard hit a first inning grand slam, Stan Williams went 8 strong innings, and the Dodgers just staved off a late inning rally by the Giants to capture the 1962 Durocher Cup in a thrilling extra 10th game.  Los Angeles jumped on Giants starter Billy Pierce early, stringing together 2 walks and a single before Howard's homer off a ballpark chance gave them an early 4-0 lead.  It would be the only runs they would score but it would be just enough.  Williams came out of the bullpen with his 'A' stuff and it showed as he allowed only 2 hits in his 8 innings before being lifted after surrendering an 8th inning pinch-hit homer by Willie McCovey.  With a string of righties due up for San Francisco in the ninth, Norm Sherry was selected to close out the game, but things got dicey when Ed Bailey popped a 2-run homer with 2 outs.  José Pagán followed with a single and the winning run came to the plate in the form of Chuck Hiller.  Alas the Giants #8 hitter could do no more than hit a routine flyout to center and Los Angeles had their cup, breaking an 8 year winning streak by the Giants (2010-2016 plus 1988.)
