It is illegal to feed wildlife in many states, even squirrels or birds.

When I was in Singapore many moons ago (1969) it was illegal to feed pigeons, it was wonderful to be able to go to the square and not get crapped on.  Sitting on park curbs and furniture was possible as well.  Super clean city though in a very authoritarian society.  Last I heard, you still cannot buy chewing gum in any form, too much risk of litter and sticky stuff on the roads and sidewalks.

We don’t have anything like that here.  Birds even steal food at picnics.

Of course an opportunistic bird will take what it can find.  In Singapore, the birds are not stupid, the paucity of food has led them to leave city center.  As a sailor, we were beset by damnable seagulls that took aim on every white hat they could find, after all, the ship chummed up stuff from the sea as well as added our own garbage to the mix.

Clean cities make it harder for birds to find human food.

Bears in Central and Northern Florida are a huge concern as nothing can ruin your day much quicker than 300 pound Florida bear rooting around your back porch, scarfing up anything not nailed down.  The newer developed areas in the areas near the Ocala National Forest and the Seminole State Forest (Orlando/Sanford Metro Areas) are intimately associated with wildness, that is why the areas are so popular.  The State Forestry folks recommend NOT leaving even bird feeders untended, even that little snack is enough to attract bears and other critters to your doorstep.

The following is not fully current but it is informative:
