What's so good about Ne Po Po training boxes?   Behavior and Training

I don't get it.

I'm going to a training seminar in a couple of weeks with Pat Stuart. There are Ne Po Po elements to it.

I see box feeding being part of it. People have called it a dopamine box.

A guy at club said he did it with his dog and was gushing about. I don't see its relevance.

Am I missing something?

I think a lot of people really like it for a precision and such aid?

No clue beyond that, I don’t use it.

It’s a gimmick and also a different way to teach focus, position and attention.  I use it with an inverted firm box, wood or plastic.  In the method I learned, the dog has to balance and work on top of a small space that might be slippery or require muscle grip. So they have to keep themselves from falling off and also concentrate on the task. It’s good for a dog whose mind is on everything except the owner or who has sloppy responses to commands.  When we work in a park, he is always scanning the horizon and always alert so I never had his full attention. It got much better once I started using a box.  It’s also smaller than he is, so sitting and lying down on the box are challenges, which he solved himself.

The box can be paired with low stim or with intermittent food rewards or both.  I used it to teach position, front, side, heel. I also used two boxes to teach Back and a distant box with a back tie to teach Place. One they are solid on the box, you move to the ground.

I’ve never heard that name before. Must be a NZ name.

Why is it called Ne Po Po? It sounds Hawaiian.

I don't know. I think it's weird. I think it's more Po Ne Po tbh.
