Shelters take advantage of this time of year to steal people's dogs. They pick up the dogs that got loose and lost on the 4th and hand them off to out of state rescues after only a 2 or 3 day hold period not giving owners who have to return to work much of a chance to go out to look for, and find, their dogs. The out of state rescues then sell these stolen pooches to unsuspecting buyers leaving hundreds of distraught owners never knowing whatever happened to their loved dogs.

All the more reason to make sure ones dogs never get out on a holiday.  We rescued a dog that ran two miles one 4th. We left a voicemail and the people picked up their dog from us after midnight.  We had been out and came hime to a strange dog by the door. He must have heard our dogs inside and felt safe there.  The owners left him outside when they went away.

Aw, poor dog!  He must have really been frightened.

When he jumped the fence, yeah.  He was a retriever.  By the time we found him he was calm and happy, and very friendly, but a lot happier when his owners arrived.
