They won’t draw post positions until later this week. The discussion of racing history I thought I’d start the thread with my favorite PA Derby. The 1986 edition almost ended with Broad Brush and Cordero in the parking lot….

Lol thinking of all the discussions about the blinkys this summer at Saratoga I’d say Angel regrets his decision in this race

I looked at the nominations on Parx site and Practical Move is nominated. I thought the Santa Anita Derby was the strongest Derby prep. The difference between Practical Move and Geaux Rocket Ride in that race was Move got a rail run and Rocket got held up by the fading pace setter coming out of the turn.

Awesome race by Broad Brush. Think he was just giving the other horses a chance to win...LOL

Not touching this race even if I had a 10 foot pole and I don't.   Too many iffy operators in there for my tastes.  Led by Beta Bob who is probably already moaning about the outside.

I’m thinking Scotland might be a good overlay here. He came from off the pace in one of his early races, but it was a sprint. He sits chilly behind Reincarnate and Saudi Crown and passes them in the stretch.

When you have a few minutes read this from Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred about Dickie Small. How Domino’s owners lived near his families farm. He worked with Whiitingham when they were young. He trained Broad Brush and raised his babies on the farm. He weaves a tall tail. I accidentally crossed paths with him at Laurel during the winter meet some years ago. I had my sons with me and I tried to get in a grandstand box that wasn’t being used. The usher shooed us out. He was in his box next door. He said he was leaving to take his. I thanked him. It was my twin sons first trip to the track. They were in 5th grade. I showed them some of the simple math of handicapping. My son AJ loved seeing how math could be used in that way. Today he’s an accounting graduate from Rutgers. Vanderbilt’s Sagamore Farm is near Small’s family farm. Many wealthy families in early New York racing had farms in Monkton. Native Dancer is buried at Sagamore.

Good read, bisket.  Thanks for that.

Cool bisket family story, too.  Of course, I took my sons to the race tracks but they always preferred other sports and none of them became handicappers.  I'm glad they didn't.   LOL

Good luck if you decide to play. Parx is another racing sewer as far as I'm concerned.  I would have enjoyed seeing them run this thing on the Tapeta at Presque Isle.  I know, I know.  Not a snowballs chance...

this time of year only grade one races at the major tracks interest me for 3 year olds if the field has anyone I'm interested in.
I will watch these races to see who improves and many years it could be somebody llke Tiznow a late starter

type.

Here is the top three year old equibase speed numbers thru 9/18/23, for anybody interested
to see how many are in the Penn. Derby and one angle is to look at the ones that are late to the party
could be ready to jump up.

I'm with you.  I'll watch to see what we can see.  You mention Tiznow and we can only hope some horse turns out so well both as a racer and as an influence on the breed.

The very idea that those BC Classic wins were over 20 years ago just blows my mind because it sure doesn't seem that long.  I was a regular BC goer in those days and saw both of Tiznow wins live.  Electrifying racing.
