The First Saturday of May
Let’s be clear on one thing: There is nothing politically correct about The Kentucky Derby. That said, there’s something really funny about New Money Stickwomen failing to rock the hats of their Southern Baptist Sisters. And let’s be honest, there’s nothing more exciting to watch than a beautiful horse in full flight. (My husband would argue that the Golden States Warriors give thoroughbreds a run for that money.)
But we’re not here to talk PETA, Cancel Culture or the Greatest Team Ever. We’re here to make a booze-free julep. The real point of the julep is to provide an icy cold, sugary respite from the cloying summer humidity. Think of it as a Kentucky Slushy. Here’s my favorite recipe:
2 parts Cock ‘n Bull Ginger Beer
1 part S. Pellegrino Lemonata
Fresh lemon floater
Frosted sprig of mint
Powdered or confectioners sugar
Freeze julep cup or collins glass for at least an hour before serving. Bruise a sprig of mint against the bottom of cup or glass. Remove and discard. Pack vessel with shaved ice. Add Lemonata followed by ginger beer. Top with more shaved ice and cover with the juice of half a lemon. Put fresh sprig of mint in a paper bag with a tablespoon of powdered sugar. Shake to frost then add mint as garnish. A frozen silver straw comes highly recommended.
