Without speed limit laws we could cruise around at any speed we choose, and think it fine, and the consequences simply the normal order of things.  Then speed laws are given, and those speeding are guilty, not just of breaking the law, but of the consequences of same.  The conscience is quickened and we are exposed.

The consequences of driving too fast have always been there, regardless of the speed limit laws. We must recognize that the speed at which a person with normal sight and reaction  times can drive is vastly different than a person which is either blind or paralyzed. It is for this reason that other laws exist which are also related to driving.

The same is also true for spiritual things.

As long as man remained in the original image and likeness of God, there was nothing that limited the expression of the perfect will of God.

But when the fall in sin happened, mankind's ability to (by nature) fulfill the will of God were dramatically reduced, and because of the on-going nature of sin, instructions were given which help us to understand just how the character of God behaves, so that we can approximate more closely the manifestation of the will of God, and things can go better for us. More blessings for being more conformed to the original image and likeness of God and according to the descriptions of the will of God, and things that are NOT blessings happening, the more that we are distanced from the manifestation of the original image and likeness of God.

But the fullness of the manifestation of the image and likeness of God is impossible for fallen creatures without the power of the ONLY Life that can produce the fullness of the manifestation of the will of God, in the earth of our flesh, as it is in heaven. It is for this reason that a way had to be provided in which ALL other (contrary) life could be purged from our being and replaced with the ONLY Life that is capable of producing the manifestation of the living reality that God IS.

This is where the Grace and Mercy of God came in, as was expressed in the Lord Jesus Christ. He provided access so that the ONLY Life which has the power to produce the manifestation of the will of God, the manifestation of His image and likeness, can permanently inhabit even the fallen earthly vessels of this corrupted dust of the earth that our bodies are. THIS is the good news, the gospel, that God can dwell in us, and the power of His life can be manifested in and through us, so much so, that even our mortal bodies can be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, from mortal back to immortal and from corruptible back to incorruptible, so that the original image and likeness of God can again manifest His perfect will, in earth as it is in heaven. He taught us to pray for this (manifestation of the will of God in earth as it is in heaven) to come into living reality in EVERY aspect of our being, so that EVERY aspect of our being can manifest ANEW the image and likeness of God, as was His will from the beginning, and we can become the vessels through which God can manifest Himself, in the earth and in the heavens (ALL of them). The majority of there coming into existence, the new heavens and the new earth, is the internal change which happens in us when we become His permanent habitation and which makes ALL things new. THEN, through us, as His chosen manner, He can restore all of the heavens and earth back to His original desired form.

Even so, COME Lord Jesus, here is the humbled and surrendered clay, that is presented before you, subjected, to do your will, in the earth of our flesh, as it is done in heaven.

THAT humility and surrender, producing subjection to the will of God, is the reason why the adversary (ha satan) sows pride and vanity, in order to also sow doctrines of demons, to cause people to vainly deny the obedience to God, which destroys the kingdom and works of the enemy, doctrines of demons, which try to label EVERY obedience to God with the title of "legalism", when in fact, it COULD be the manifestation of the power of the very Life of God, expressing Him through us, and NOT legalism.

If the obedience is the manifestation of the power of the Life of God in earthen vessels, then to label it "legalism" can come perilously close to blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

Perfect agreement here James, especially as regards labeling things legalistic described as Holy in the Word; because men have used them wrongly.  If I had a Nickle for every time I said:  what men do has zero effect on the Word of GOD: it stands as is.  One dear sister is hung up on a terrible experience she had with an assembly holding to Holiness in appearance of dress.  Pray her eyes are opened to this, to me she is a genuine sister living a sacrificial life which challenges me, and most all others who know her.

An appearance of Holiness which is imposed by man NEVER works.

But the Holiness which is a product of the power of the Life of God dwelling in us, is a living reality which goes far beyond man's imposition or abilities to try to produce, AND it CAN even manifest its self in a change in how we present ourselves to others.

True holiness is NOT just only a dress standard, but it WILL change our appearance.

True Holiness will no longer present its self in a sensual/seductive way that makes no difference in dress styles between a prostitute and the wife of a pastor.

Just as I heard a minister relate about a "sister" which said that she could even go to church wearing nothing more than a string bikini and it would not bother her conscience, and the minister replied "of course not, because you have no more conscience than a snake has hips".

Can it be "imposed" by man? NO! Except to deny entrance into the church building to people who are basically nude, and telling them that they are free to come back when they put on some clothing.

Does God have BOTH the authority and ability to make His standards to be a living reality in "whosoever will"? ABSOLUTELY YES! But THAT is for each one to work out personally between themselves and their Creator, with fear and trembling.

Sadly, the fear and trembling is almost totally absent from most churches today, and then people wonder why the nation and the world is in the condition that it is currently in.

Everyone that I know, which have the living reality of God's standards, DO NOT try to impose it on others, they live the reality and allow the Holy Spirit to cause others to "hunger and thirst" after the righteousness that they see on display, and then are not ashamed or embarrassed, when people ask about it, to show the scriptural foundations for their choices in wardrobe.

AGAIN, true Holiness goes FAR beyond just only wardrobe choices, but it CAN include changes in a person's wardrobe choices, while recognizing that ONLY the Holy Spirit can produce the living reality.

I don't even think it's standards, it is the natural outworking of an inner reality.

Amen to both of you brothers. Holiness is not a thing, it is God Himself. Holiness is what God is. God is holy. oliness is God's nature.

1 Peter 1:15-17 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

God is holy, and has chosen us, His children to be holy.

Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

To be holy is not to follow religious ordinances, but to be full of the holy One. Holiness is the outworking of an inner reality. Of course this will be evidenced in our manner of life, our living. That is why the Bible calls us believers "the saints", which means "the holy ones."

1 Corinthians  1:2   To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, the called saints, with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, who is theirs and ours:

This is not a special class of people as some suppose, but everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord, in every place.

Does the Word of God give descriptions of how God Himself behaves and how He wants for His children to behave (like Him)?

The problem comes from the enemy sowing the vanity and arrogance that, just only by imitating an outward appearance which conforms to the Biblical descriptions that, THAT is all there is to "doing" holiness.

But God is not deceived, He knows if the obedience is the product and manifestation of His Life dwelling in us, or if it is just the flesh trying to produce an appearance without it being Him doing it.

An obedience that is attempted without Him is STILL disobedience, because the ONLY obedience which is completely acceptable in His sight is that which can ONLY be produced by the power of His Own Life in us and He said that without Him we can do NOTHING.

But with Him, ALL things are possible, even manifesting the power of His very own Life. After all, if we are His children, it is because the very same Life that is in Him, is in us also.

Just because it is NOT by our own abilities without Him, does NOT mean that there will not exist outward manifestations (when He does it), and He will not manifest anything that is contrary to His own Word.

The descriptions are in the Word. Call the Word its self a standard, or a law, but it comes from God and NOT from man, and the Word is NOT just only ink on paper, the Word was made flesh and is the PERSON of the Lord Jesus Christ. But the ONLY way that the Word can be made flesh, but NOW in our bodies, is by us becoming one with Him in marriage, to become constituting members of His Body and of His Wife, thus becoming the living reality of the New (Marriage) Covenant, which will not ONLY will go up to meet Him in the air, but which will ALSO descend out of heaven with Him (Rev 21:10).

So YES, there ARE standards. NOT just only a list of descriptions, but ALSO the power of His Life in manifestation, which will NOT contradict ANY of His descriptions.

Does this mean that we become "legalistic"? ONLY by comparing ourselves to HIM, but NOT by trying to artificially impose THOSE standards on others, by our own abilities, when our own abilities will not even work for ourselves.

We should not let the enemy cause us to stumble over his labeling the word "standards" as something evil, it ONLY becomes evil when WE try to produce it for ourselves and impose it upon others by our own abilities without Him. But there ARE true standards which are Holy and which are described in the Word of God, God's standards, and ALL of His children WILL fulfill them in supernatural obedience.

It is ALWAYS and ONLY by the manifest power of His Life in us fulfilling everything that He wrote about Himself, and about us as his children who manifest His attributes.

Totally agree James, but those standards are worse than nothing when not embraced and shown forth in ever growing maturity by the life within((Christ in us)).  Sort of like those doing wonderful things in Revelation 2, but in fact leaving their first love.  If not rectified it was better that they never knew.

Amen, and we are not to but stumbling blocks before one another, but proceed with the same hope for our brethren that we have for ourselves.  Many are good at seeing the blind spots in others, but virtually blind to their own.  This renders them worse than useless.
