The Church A Spiritual People

So the Church, according to the Divine conception, consists essentially of - indeed is - a spiritual people, and we must somehow get to the place where we see it as God and as Heaven sees it. And that means a tremendous adjustment for us to make. Our practical difficulty is this. In apostolic times, it was quite easy to see the Church as a single entity. Although it was represented in numerous local companies all over the Roman world, yet it was still a single entity: it was not then divided up into the '-ists' and the '-ans' and the '-ians' and the '-ics' and the 'isms' and all the other terminations that we know today. When you speak to Christian people today, they very soon ask you if you are an '-ist', or an '-ic', or an '-an', or an '-ian', and they say I am an... 'ist'. Ah, but there was nothing of that in the Church in the days of the Apostles. Whatever little differences there were amongst the Lord's people locally, the Church as a whole was one entity, everywhere, held together by spiritual ties and by spiritual ministries, but with no central government or sectional government of affiliated bodies. It was just one, everywhere. If you had gone from one province to another, from one country to another, visiting the Christians in every place, they would never have asked you whether you were an '-ist', or an '-ian', or an '-ic' - whether you belonged to some particular group, distinguished by a special name. No, you were a Christian - that was enough. You belonged to the Lord - that was enough.

But, with the closing of the apostolic age, things were changing - changing into what we have today. An altogether wrong and false mentality has grown up around the word 'church'. Most people today, when that word is used, think of one of these things with a special termination, or of some place or building - a 'church' - and that is the mentality that is common. Let us be quite clear: recovery of the original demands an escape from that mentality. Do not misunderstand me: I am not saying you have got to come out of this and that and the other thing - I am saying that you have got to get out of a MENTALITY. We need absolute emancipation from this earth mentality about the Church, into the heavenly standpoint; to see what the Church really is, as God sees it and as Heaven sees it. We must get free of the confusion which has been brought about by the historical institution called 'The Church'.

When the church is under the headship of the Lord Jesus Christ ALONE through faith in the Word of GOD.  Then the order therein will be of born again believers as defined and discerned by the Word of GOD; as the family of faith walks in the light together.  This and this alone allows for a genuine washing of the Word which will expose and destroy all those things which have wrought so much confusion and strife among us.

This is our struggle. We must first see that the church is a single entity. There is one Body and there is one Spirit. We genuine believers are all baptized in this one Spirit and into this one Body. The only thing that divides us is distance. That is why in the Bible the church is distinguished only by where it is located.

Ephesians 4:4 One Body and one Spirit, even as also you were called in one hope of your calling;

1 Corinthians 12:13  For also in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and were all given to drink one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 1:2   To the church of God which is in Corinth

Then we must go on to see that there is one, and only one God-ordained ground for the church to be built on. Yes, the foundation is Christ, but upon what ground is the foundation laid? There was such a place in the Old Testament as a type.

Deuteronomy 12:11  Then to the place where Jehovah your God will choose to cause His name to dwell, there you shall bring all that I am commanding you, your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the heave offering of your hand and all your choice vows which you vow to Jehovah.

2 Chronicles  6:6   But I have chosen Jerusalem that My name might be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.

The God-ordained place that God established His house, His dwelling place and the place for His people to meet with Him was Jerusalem. Jerusalem is an actual city with boundaries, and establishes a principle which can be seen in the New Testament. God builds His house, the church, on the ground of the locality of the city in which the church exists. This preserves the oneness of the Spirit.

Revelation  1:11   Saying, What you see write in a scroll and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamos and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea

The Head is in the heavens, but the church, the house of the living God, is on the earth. This church must be built, and to be built, it must be established on the ground, the earth. Our challenge is to "keep the oneness of the Spirit", "until we all arrive at the oneness of the faith."

Ephesians 4:3 Being diligent to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the uniting bond of peace:

Ephesians 4:13 Until we all arrive at the oneness of the faith and of the full knowledge of the Son of God, at a full-grown man, at the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

Ephesians 4:16 Out from whom all the Body, being joined together and being knit together

The joining and knitting here is the building. This must happen. Today there are many free groups who fancy themselves to be joined to the Head in the heavens, but have no fellowship with the saints on the earth, except in their little group. This can never reach God's goal.

Again, there is a fundamental difference between unity and oneness. A bag of marbles is in unity, but each remains independent. A bag of wheat, ground into flour is in oneness. All the individual grains become one thing. This is the building.

The oneness in Ephesians 4:3 is the actual and factual oneness that all genuine believers possess. We are born of one Father, have one Lord, and are filled with one Spirit. This is a fact.

The oneness in Ephesians 4:13 is the practical and experiential oneness. This oneness is arrived at through the growth in life. This oneness requires us to give up many pet doctrines, teachings and opinions and to no longer be children and grow up, in all things, into Christ the Head.

Ephesians  4:14   That we may be no longer little children tossed by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching in the sleight of men, in craftiness with a view to a system of error,
4:15   But holding to truth in love, we may grow up into Him in all things, who is the Head, Christ,

Otherwise, we may never arrive at the oneness of the faith and of the full knowledge of the Son of God.

Amen, and what a challenge it is.  There is none close to sufficient for such a task, against which the host of hell will fight to the death, but GOD through those holy unto Him.
