Based on Malachi 3:16-18 I believe the Lord will harken to us as we consider his word together.

Gen 1:26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Gen 5:1  This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Question: When God created man in the beginning, did He create man in the image and likeness of the Word?

If man was created in the image and likeness of the Word, then it is easy to understand how that by the disobedience of one word, man fell from the image and likeness of the Word, and therefore, the ENTIRE plan of redemption, salvation, transformation and restoration, is specifically to take us back to the image and likeness of the Word.

   That one word was to place ourselves as final arbitrator = you shall be as gods, KNOWING good and evil.

Christ, as the image of God is God embodied, defined, explained, and expressed. As such, He is the Word become flesh. Don't you think that was God's intention for Adam, to receive God as life so that he could embody, define, explain and express the Living God through his living?

This is God's intent and desire for the Body of Christ also, and is fulfilled and consummated in the New Jerusalem, in my humble opinion.

Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of all creation

Ephesians 1:5 Predestinating us unto sonship through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will

Ephesians 1:9 Making known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Himself.

It pleases God to reveal Christ in us.

   The image of GOD as pertaining to man could be best stated IMO as:  the perfect response to perfect love given.
