Okay, it's starting to look like folks are leaning toward option 2.  So, thanks for the ideas (Excel spreadsheet, platforms, etc). I'm new at doing the linking instructions Jenifer gave me, so I made screen shots and printed them to follow. I have to say I'm not proficient with Excel (and trying to add linking too), but I am happy to group the members alphabetically by platform.  Just remember, this will strictly be a member list page....not for posting "in". The point of the names being clickable links is so you can click on a friend in the list and send your PM's, or add them as a friend, etc.

Also, since I'll be using the linkable name, which may be different from game names or wish list names, I'll also add those in parentheses if available since some may only know their friends by their game name (or name on wish list)--(i.e., Redcloud (Dani)).  I hope this is plain as mud to everyone and feel free to let me know if I'm missing anything.

Ada.  I know some excel.  Would be happy to work with you on this.  I was thinking people could download a spreadsheet for whatever reason they may want.  I could see a number of ways it could be put together and sorted to include BFG and Delphi names, BFG ID.  Could have real first name.  Could have a number of items.  Let me know if you want to move this way.

Thanks, Rae--Can you do a mock up? I can't picture what it would look like. If it's going to look like a spreadsheet, that wasn't really what I was picturing in my head.

In my mind, I just envision an alphabetical list of members, grouped under the platform they play on, but the names are clickable just like we do now to reply to a post.  I'm thinking I may just get the list pulled together for the moment as a regular list, then work on substituting the names with the clickable names later. With the end near for the BFG forum, and more people migrating over, I just think we need something sooner rather than later for now.  That being said, there's always room for improvement, so we could always change it for something more.  At least we'll have a jumping off point and friends will have something to work with initially.

Now you just have to figure out HOW to write it.

Alphabetically seems logical, but by what name?

Forum name or Game name?

I suggest you choose now and just start compiling a list.  Here is fine.

Then when the list is complete, transfer it to a new thread and create the links.

You do have ONE trick to make it all easier!

That is the TO box...

Click on it and type a - a whole drop box of names starting with A will appear.

I suggest you create 13 posts, two letters per post and people can see where they are and what they want to be identified as in their link.

Sure.  Will send one tomorrow.  So far I have Delphi Name, BFG Name, Friend ID, Real First Name, Platform.  I will also look at linking the Delphi Name to the individual.

Love the idea of a list by platform. Love the idea of clickable links, too, but if that's too much work, the names would be great too.

I used to teach Excel, so if you made a list of Delphi names, game names, and Delphi ID numbers, I could create the hyperlinks very fast with an Excel function that would show the name and game name, but link to the profile. Not sure if that could be copied into a forum post easily, though.
