Florence Griffith-Joyner - also known as Flo-Jo, was an American track and field athlete. The world records she set in 1988 for both the 100 m and 200 m still stand. During the late 1980s she became a popular figure due to both her record-setting athleticism and eclectic personal style. Griffith-Joyner was athletic from a young age and began running track meets as a child. While attending California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), she continued to compete in track and field. While still in college, she qualified for the 100 m 1980 Olympics, although she did not actually compete due to the U.S. boycott. She made her Olympic debut four years later, winning a silver medal in the 200 meter distance at the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles. At the 1988 U.S. Olympic trials, Griffith set a new world record in the 100 meter sprint. She went on to win three gold medals at the 1988 Olympics. In February 1989, Griffith-Joyner abruptly retired from athletics. She remained a pop culture figure through endorsement deals, acting, and designing. She died in her sleep as the result of an epileptic seizure in 1998 at the age of 38.

Trivia:

Ian gained the nickname of Thorpedo due to his superior ability to swim fast.

As a child, Ian Thorpe was allergic to chlorine. As a result, he had to swim his early races with his head out of the water. Even still, Ian was able to win. From this early age, Ian was destined for swimming greatness, even with such a handicap as being allergic to chlorine. Eventually without medication, Ian was able to overcome the allergy. During his career, Ian has spent thousands of hours in chlorine pools.

Just outside of Sydney, Australia in Ultimo, New South Wales is the Ian Thorpe Aquatic and Fitness Centre. The center, named after Thorpe, has three swimming pools as well as a fully equipped gym. One of the pools is an indoor 50 meter heated lap pool. The $40 million facility is shaped like a wave and was designed by Harry Seidler from Vienna, a famous architect in Australia.

Marathon Swimming (Taking place in open water environments such as the sea, rivers and lakes, but with a premium on safety, the men's and women's 10km open water swimming event is known as the marathon swimming event. This event is a relative newcomer to the Olympic program, making its debut as an official Olympic event at the Beijing 2008 Games. Usually staged on a circular course, the swimmers receive water at regular intervals as their endurance is tested to the maximum for up to two hours. Naturally, records are important, but as the races are often determined by weather and the open water conditions, planning a strategy is of vital importance. The swimmers who are able to use the waves, tides and currents to their best advantage are often those who post the best results. Being in tip-top physical condition is a given, but there also many swimmers with a wealth of experience in skillfully responding to the prevailing conditions and planning the optimal strategies)

"Feeding" during the marathon. Marathon swimmers spend about two hours in the water. As such, staying well hydrated is one of the most important factors of racing, especially in humid conditions. In order to take water in the most efficient way possible, coaches head to the water’s edge and hand their athlete a water bottle attached to a large stick with their nation’s flag on it...........

Marathon swimming is unique in that competitors must navigate around natural factors, as well as their rivals. Fish could be seen jumping over the heads of swimmers as they cut through the water at the Odaiba Marine Park, with one hitting a bronze medalist Kareena Lee’s chest. "It jumped up and hit me (on the chest). I didn't know what it was at first and I was like 'woah'," Australian Lee said of the fish.........

Calling it a night...........................
