American Express Gold Card Dress (Australian costume designer Lizzy Gardiner wore a dress made of 254 American Express Gold cards to the 67th Academy Awards on 27 March 1995, where she won an Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. All of the cards were genuine, but had expired)

Trivia:

The gown had originally been conceived for the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert along with many other outlandish costumes such as one made solely out of pink flip flops, but American Express had forbidden it. Gardiner said, "I'm broke, and I didn't have anything to wear. So I went through my list of past good ideas." The dress was auctioned off for charity in March 1999 for $12,650, with the proceeds going to AmfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. It, along with other costumes for Priscilla, was inspired by Sydney's drag queen culture of the 1990s.

The outfit was made of 254 expired American Express gold cards, and was split to the waist. The under garment was made entirely of the cards, except for the slim gold straps at the top, although the gold shawl which went over the under garment only had cards lining the edges. Gardiner completed the outfit with gold platform shoes.

Diane von Fürstenberg - is a Belgian fashion designer best known for her wrap dress. She initially rose to prominence in 1969 when she married into the princely German House of Fürstenberg, as the wife of Prince Egon von Fürstenberg. Following their separation in 1972 and divorce in 1983, she has continued to use his family name. Her fashion company, Diane von Furstenberg (DvF), is available in over 70 countries and 45 free-standing shops worldwide. Von Fürstenberg made her name by designing the wrap dress for the working woman. She got her inspiration from Julie Nixon Eisenhower, when she saw her on television wearing a wrap top with a skirt. Fürstenberg combined the look into one piece in 1972 and her design took the world by storm. Three years later, she was making 15,000 wrap dresses a week, and the design remains popular today.

Comment: I did some checking and Von Fürstenberg wasn't the first to come up with the wrap dress. It was already popular in the 30s and 40s. The reason I checked was because I remember making my own wrap dress earlier than the 1972 date given.
