Louisville Collegiate School - is a Junior Kindergarten - 12th grade, co-ed independent school located in the historic Highlands neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. The school enrolls 750 students at the campus on Glenmary Avenue. Louisville Collegiate School has a long tradition of academic excellence and creativity within an exceptionally warm and supportive environment. It is divided into a Lower School (Junior Kindergarten-Grade 4), Middle School (Grades 5–8), and Upper School (Grades 9–12). Each division has its own administrative head and core faculty. Many faculty members teach in more than one division of the school. Louisville Collegiate School is the only Global Online Academy (GOA) member in the state of Kentucky. Opening its doors on September 23, 1915, in a house at 512 West Ormsby Avenue, it became the first school in Kentucky committed to preparing young women for college. Virginia Perrin Speed (1879–1968) and her husband William Shallcross Speed (1873–1955) were the principal founders and sustainers of the school, and are largely responsible for the school's success. Needing more land to grow, Collegiate moved in 1927 to its current home on Glenmary Avenue in the historic Highlands, just east of downtown Louisville, in what is now the Lower School. Although the school initially accepted boys in the primary grades, it remained traditionally a girls' school until 1972 when the Lower School became coeducational. In 1980, Collegiate's Board of Trustees established coeducation in the Upper School. The first coed class graduated in 1987.

Multiplication Table (In mathematics a mathematical table is used to define a multiplication operation for an algebraic system. The decimal multiplication table was traditionally taught as an essential part of elementary arithmetic around the world, as it lays the foundation for arithmetic operations with base-ten numbers. Many educators believe it is necessary to memorize the table up to 9 × 9. The oldest known multiplication tables were used by the Babylonians about 4000 years ago. However, they used a base of 60. The oldest known tables using a base of 10 are the Chinese decimal multiplication table on bamboo strips dating to about 305 BC, during China's Warring States period. The multiplication table is sometimes attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras (570–495 BC). It is also called the Table of Pythagoras in many languages (for example French, Italian and Russian), sometimes in English. The Greco-Roman mathematician Nichomachus (60–120 AD), a follower of Neopythagoreanism, included a multiplication table in his Introduction to Arithmetic, whereas the oldest surviving Greek multiplication table is on a wax tablet dated to the 1st century AD and currently housed in the British Museum. In 493 AD, Victorius of Aquitaine wrote a 98-column multiplication table which gave (in Roman numerals) the product of every number from 2 to 50 times and the rows were "a list of numbers starting with one thousand, descending by hundreds to one hundred, then descending by tens to ten, then by ones to one, and then the fractions down to 1/144)

National Spelling Bee - The Scripps National Spelling Bee (formerly the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee and commonly called the National Spelling Bee) is an annual spelling bee held in the United States. The bee is run on a not-for-profit basis by The E. W. Scripps Company and is held at a hotel or convention center in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area during the week following Memorial Day weekend. Although most of its participants are from the U.S., students from countries such as The Bahamas, Canada, the People's Republic of China, India, Ghana, Japan, Jamaica, Mexico, and New Zealand have also competed in recent years. Historically, the competition has been open to, and remains open to, the winners of sponsored regional spelling bees in the U.S. (including territories such as Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the Navajo Nation, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with overseas military bases in Germany and South Korea). Participants from countries other than the U.S. must be regional spelling-bee winners as well. Contest participants cannot be older than fourteen as of August 31 of the year before the competition; nor can they be past the eighth grade as of February 1 of that year's competition. Previous winners are also ineligible to compete. In 2019, the Spelling Bee ran out of words that might challenge the contestants and ended up having 8 winners. The 2020 National Spelling Bee competition, originally scheduled for May 24, was suspended and later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first time it had been canceled since 1945.

Open Book Test/Exam (is a test that allows students to use textbooks, notes, or other approved materials while answering questions. It is designed to assess students' ability to find, use, analyze, synthesize, compare, or evaluate information rather than memorize facts. It can also mean that students get the questions before the test. It may be a sit-down exam with a limited time or a take-home exam with more flexibility. It is often used in subjects that require direct reference to written sources, such as law, statistics, or parliament)

Pencils - I'm not going to post the wiki explanation of a pencil. We all know what a pencil is. But I wonder ... Do kids even use pencils anymore? They don't use textbooks ... everything is on their "tablet". So do they have a use for a pencil? I guess that's a question I should ask my granchildren.

Química (Spanish for Chemistry. It is the scientific study of the properties and behavior of matter. It is a physical science under natural sciences that covers the elements that make up matter to the compounds made of atoms, molecules and ions: their composition, structure, properties, behavior and the changes they undergo during a reaction with other substances. Chemistry also addresses the nature of chemical bonds in chemical compounds. In the scope of its subject, chemistry occupies an intermediate position between physics and biology. It is sometimes called the central science because it provides a foundation for understanding both basic and applied scientific disciplines at a fundamental level. For example, chemistry explains aspects of plant growth (botany), the formation of igneous rocks (geology), how atmospheric ozone is formed and how environmental pollutants are degraded (ecology), the properties of the soil on the moon (cosmochemistry), how medications work (pharmacology), and how to collect DNA evidence at a crime scene (forensics). Chemistry is a study that has existed since ancient times. Over this time frame, it has evolved, and now chemistry encompasses various areas of specialization, or subdisciplines, that continue to increase in number and interrelate to create further interdisciplinary fields of study. The applications of various fields of chemistry are used frequently for economic purposes in the chemical industry)

Recess - Recess is a break from formal learning that allows children to socialize, exercise, and take a pause from school-related tasks. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it. Recess is necessary for the health and development of children and should never be withheld for punishment or academic reasons. Research has long shown that it is more effective to integrate breaks into work rather than work for long stretches. For young children, who tend not to process information as well as older children, taking breaks for unstructured play is critical in increasing focus and attention. In addition, recess offers opportunities for children to learn and enhance communication skills, negotiation, cooperation, sharing, problem-solving, perseverance, self-control, and conflict resolution. Studies have found that recess benefits students by improving their memory and attention, helping them stay on topic in class, reducing their disruptive behavior, and improving their social development. Despite these positive benefits of recess, studies show that many schools (40% nationwide) have cut back recess programs or eliminated recess altogether. A recent Gallup poll commissioned by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reported that 77% of school principals admitted that they withhold recess as punishment. In that same report, 8-in-10 principals acknowledged that time to play has a “positive impact on achievement,” and two-thirds of principals stated that “students listen better after recess and are more focused in class”. All children benefit from recess, but when a child is struggling with a mental health disorder, the need for play is magnified. One-in-five children in the United States has a diagnosable mental disorder, and 1-in-10 youth has mental health challenges that are severe enough to impair how he/she functions at home, school or in the community. These children often feel overwhelmed and are sometimes paralyzed by school stress and test anxiety. Recess provides children with the opportunity to exert energy in a healthy way. And because recess is a break from the structure and expectations of school, children have the chance to take control of their world even if only for a short time.

Scholarship (is a form of financial aid awarded to students for further education. Generally, scholarships are awarded based on a set of criteria such as academic merit, diversity and inclusion, athletic skill, and financial need. Scholarship criteria usually reflect the values and goals of the donor of the award, and while scholarship recipients are not required to repay scholarships, the awards may require that the recipient continue to meet certain requirements during their period of support, such maintaining a minimum grade point average or engaging in a certain activity (e.g., playing on a school sports team for athletic scholarship holders). Scholarships also range in generosity; some cover partial tuition, while others offer a 'full-ride', covering all tuition, accommodation, housing and others. Some prestigious, highly competitive scholarships are well-known even outside the academic community, such as Fulbright Scholarship and the Rhodes Scholarships at the graduate level, and the Robertson, Morehead-Cain and Jefferson Scholarships at the undergraduate level)

Tutoring - is private academic support, usually provided by an expert teacher; someone with deep knowledge or defined expertise in a particular subject or set of subjects. A tutor, formally also called an academic tutor, is a person who provides assistance or tutelage to one or more people on certain subject areas or skills. The tutor spends a few hours on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to transfer their expertise on the topic or skill to the student (also called a tutee). Tutoring can take place in different settings.

I remember my dad used to tutor high school students in math. Now my son also tutors. Primarily in math but also social studies.
