Well, missed last 2 days of castle challenge because my game didn't save them. Did next to last day twice, was almost done with the last day when my game closed. When I opened back up it was all gone again.

Sorry to hear about this Libby.  I had a similar experience; had to do two days over because the game didn't save them.  Then today as I was finishing the last challenge, our area had a power outage and went the power came back up the game wouldn't connect to the server.  When I was finally able to connect the castle challenge time had expired.
