Hang in there, Czoe.  I have a close relative who was a drunk for years - ended up losing his family, his job everything.  He has now been sober for almost a year.  He is like a different person.  I never would have believed it but it happened.  Maybe it will happen to your brother.  Will be thinking of you and your family and hoping that things will be much better soon.

Had my first Pfizer jab yesterday! Booked for the second one at the end of the month. Had a bit of a sore arm, but that is all.

The NZ govt has not been particularly good at the vaccine rollout, so I feel some relief that I have managed to get the first one, and am on track for the second one.

Weesam, that's good to hear about your first shot.

Just curious, has NZ been hit with the Delta variant of Covid like other countries?

We've been lucky so far, no Delta variant has managed to make it passed managed quarantine. We've had a couple foreign fishing boats that came into port with delta on board, but they go straight to quarantine.

Had a near scare with an Australian tourist in Wellington who was diagnosed with Delta variant when he returned home, but we dodged a bullet there and he didn't spread it, probably because he was fully vaccinated.

Borders are closed to Australia again now. Queensland and NSW are having a bit of a time with it. The only place our border is currently open to is the Cook Islands, who haven't had a single case.

That's good ... because it's getting crazy again here in the USA. If only people would get the vaccine, it wouldn't be so bad.

We haven't had a Covid case in the community since February. Life pretty much goes on as normal here and it's easy to forget what is happening out in the rest of the world. Believe me, we know how fortunate we are. All it would take is a mistake in MIQ and it could be here as well. I think that is what happened in Australia that lead to its current outbreak.

I read a really interesting thing from an immunologist talking about that. Basically they were using the math and R0 numbers to show how if everyone that can gets vaccinated and wears a mask for a bit longer, the disease will most likely die out. With Delta, vaccination alone is no longer enough.

That's so true. I've gone back to wearing a mask if I go out. Some of the cities are starting to mandate them again in public buildings. Louisville is one of those. Schools in Louisville start back on the 11th. Everyone - students, faculty, administration - will be required to wear a mask even if you had the vaccine. That decision was made just last week. Of course, there are always people up in arms about this.

This is just so crazy!

Crazy is the word for it. I truly do not understand the thinking of anti-vaxxers. But then I was raised by a mother who had polio as a child, and because of that experience we all had to have whatever vaccinations were going!

I work for a university, and we have been open since we came out of lockdown back in April 2020. No masks or social distancing or anything required. However, if Covid came back to NZ you bet I'd be wearing a mask, no question.  And so would all my colleagues.

In this instance we can't really lump all anti-vaxxers into one group.

There is a difference between anti-vaccine and vaccine hesitancy.

I'm hesitant to get Astra Zeneca, and I can't stand the conspiracy nuts who peddle their disinformation.

Yes, absolutely, those are different things. Obviously there has been a lot of talk about Astra Zeneca, and that would make anyone concerned. i would have been concerned if that was what was offered to me. But I believe I still would have taken it, because the odds of dying of Covid without a vaccine, vs having a bad reaction to the vaccine, are not even close, particularly as I am older and have underlying conditions.

The hesitant can be reasoned with, fears worked through, and solutions reached. The straight up anti-vaxxers can't be reasoned with until someone they love dies, and sometimes not even then.
