The Gulf War began on January 16, 1991, with an extensive aerial bombing campaign. The war, waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States, was against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait arising from oil pricing and production disputes. For 42 consecutive days and nights, the coalition forces subjected Iraq to one of the most intensive air bombardments in military history. The coalition flew over 100,000 sorties, dropping 88,500 tons of bombs, which widely destroyed military and civilian infrastructure.

The Jerry Springer Show  premiered on Sept. 30, 1991. It was an American syndicated tabloid talk show produced and hosted by its namesake, Jerry Springer, it aired for 28 seasons and over 4000 episodes. The program was unsuccessful in ratings in its first seasons due to its focus on more political issues. This led to an overhaul of the structure which by the mid-1990s led to the show as it is known now, filled with controversial topics (such as incest and adultery), profanity, physical fights and scantily clad guests. Critical response to the show was mostly negative and in 2002, TV Guide proclaimed it to be the worst TV show of all time. On June 13, 2018, NBCUniversal ended production of new episodes of the show after 27 seasons. The show taped its final scenes on July 6, 2018, and its final episode aired on July 26, 2018, with reruns continuing on The CW immediately thereafter.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is closed to the public because of safety concerns on January 7, 1990, after more than two decades of stabilization studies and spurred by the abrupt collapse of the Civic Tower of Pavia in 1989. The bells were removed to relieve some weight, and cables were cinched around the third level and anchored several hundred meters away. Apartments and houses in the path of a potential fall of the tower were vacated for safety. The selected method for preventing the collapse of the tower was to slightly reduce its tilt to a safer angle by soil removal 38 cubic meters (1,342 cubic feet) from underneath the raised end. The tower's tilt was reduced by 45 centimeters (17.7 inches), returning to its 1838 position. After a decade of corrective reconstruction and stabilization efforts, the tower was reopened to the public on 15 December 2001, and was declared stable for at least another 300 years. In total, 70 metric tons (77 short tons) of soil were removed. In May 2008, engineers announced that the tower had been stabilized such that it had stopped moving for the first time in its history. They stated that it would be stable for at least 200 years.
