For some reason, I keep getting a feeling of it being someone that saw her, or knew her from the coffee shop.

I think it will be someone you least expect to kill someone.

CHARLOTTE -- Police have released new information about the murder of a UNC Charlotte student from Chapel Hill.

According to police reports released Wednesday, in the two-hour period before her body was found on May 5, Irina Yarmolenko made a stop at a Goodwill store.

The body of the 20-year-old college student was found along the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly.

Authorities believe she died from being suffocated, but they have not said how exactly she may have been killed.

Police have not released a suspect's name or a possible motive. Yarmolenko graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 2006.

Police release surveillance video in case of UNC Charlotte student's slaying

Mount Holly Police on Friday released surveillance video that shows Ira Yarmolenko about 2½ hours before her body was found on the banks of the Catawba River.

The 1½-minute segment was captured by a camera mounted outside the Goodwill store at 1725 Harris Houston Road in Charlotte. Yarmolenko is seen driving up to the store's drop-off station at 10:33 a.m. May 5.

Yarmolenko's blue Saturn pulls to a stop. She exits and begins pulling out several articles of clothing and other items from her backseat as an apparent Goodwill employee walks up to assist her.

She appears to be wearing the same UNC Pembroke hooded sweatshirt, black skirt and athletic shoes that she had on just after 1 p.m., when two personal watercraft users discovered her body by the riverside.

After getting back into her car, Yarmolenko pulls away and turns right onto Harris Houston Road toward University City Boulevard.

Before visiting the Goodwill store, Yarmolenko stopped by the State Employees Credit Union on University Boulevard at 10:18 a.m.

Police released no other new information about the murder investigation Friday. But they are hoping the images on the tape could trigger something in someone's mind.

"Video has the potential to sometimes jog people's memories better than a written description does

Loved ones remember slain student

CHAPEL HILL -- The body of 20-year-old University of North Carolina at Charlotte student Irina Yarmolenko was found lying beside her car near a remote area of the Catawba River in Mount Holly on May 5.

Police say she was suffocated, and while they continue their investigation, family and friends want to tell the world how she lived. They held a memorial service Saturday at Yarmolenko's alma mater, Chapel Hill High School.

Once inside the school’s auditorium, even those who didn't know Yarmolenko soon felt close enough to call her by her nickname, Ira. Pictures from her birth to her college career at UNC Charlotte dissolved in and out on a big screen and words from family and friends tickled mourners and brought tears to their eyes.

UNC Charlotte offers reward for info
Updated: 05/16/2008
CHARLOTTE -- UNC Charlotte is offering a $10,000 reward in the hopes of finding more information related to the death of Irina Yarmolenko, a 20-year-old sophomore at the school.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois announced the reward Thursday, and it will be given out by Crime Stoppers of Gaston County.

Yarmolenko’s body was found last week next to her car on the bank of the Catawba River. Police said suffocation was the cause of death but they are not sure of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.

Slain student may have entered Mount Holly with suspect

Police have evidence that slain UNC Charlotte student Ira Yarmolenko was with a possible suspect when she arrived in Mount Holly on May 5, according to her brother Pavel Yarmolenko.

Pavel Yarmolenko would not discuss details of evidence, such as whether a witness saw his 20-year-old sister with a possible suspect somewhere in Mount Holly.

In the two weeks since Ira Yarmolenko was killed, police have not disclosed any evidence of her whereabouts between 10:50 a.m., when she was seen at Jackson's Java near campus, and 1:15 p.m., when two jet skiers found her body on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly.

"There's certainly evidence," Pavel Yarmolenko said Sunday. "The police have evidence she was with someone when she came into Mount Holly. And I'm sure that will become evident very soon."

Ira Yarmolenko's body was found lying next to her dark-blue Saturn, which had traveled into the woods behind the Stowe Family YMCA and Water's Edge Development and then down a steep embankment, where it crashed into stump a few feet from the river. She died of asphyxiation, according to police.

Her older brother Pavel, who is a graduate student at Duke University, said his family is not privy to every detail in the case.

Pavel Yarmolenko said he isn't certain of the killer's identity, but he thinks the killer is a man, who was a stranger or not very familiar with his sister.

Murdered UNCC student's family reaches out

May 28, 2008

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It’s been three weeks since the body of a UNC-Charlotte student was found near the Catawba River.

Investigators are still searching for her killer, while her family is taking a different approach.

Irina Yarmolenko, or Ira as her friends called her, worked at the Jackson’s Java coffee house across from UNCC’s campus.

Her family decided that is where they wanted to be as they create a way to remember the student that they hope will benefit millions of people.

For her family, Yarmolenko’s death is still too painful a memory.

Mount Holly police checking new leads

Homicide of UNCC student

UNC Charlotte sophomore Irina Yarmolenko was found dead Monday next to her car on the banks of the Catawba River.

A surveillance video released last week by Mount Holly Police showing UNC Charlotte sophomore Irina Yarmolenko dropping off Goodwill donations has turned up new leads in the homicide case, authorities said Thursday.

Mount Holly spokeswoman Leslie Shiel said police aren't giving details but that the new information "is worth following up." She said Chief David Belk credits call from the public with helping them develop leads.

The May 5 video showed Yarmolenko beside her car at a Goodwill store drop-off on 1725 Harris Houston Rd., not far from the UNCC campus. Police said a young man who appears in the video was working for Goodwill and is not a suspect in the case.

About two hours later, a couple riding personal watercraft found Yarmolenko's body lying next to her car on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly, some 30 miles from campus. Investigators said she died of asphyxiation but exactly what happened and why is still a mystery.

Anyone with information about the case should call Mount Holly Police at 704-827-4343.

Family of slain UNCC student waits for answers

The family of a slain University of North Carolina at Charlotte student found one-month ago said Thursday it has been agonizing waiting to find out why the student was killed.

Irina Yarmolenko, who is from Chapel Hill, was found dead on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly on May 5. Police said the 20-year-old was asphyxiated.

Pavel Yarmolenko, Irina’s brother, said he keeps in close contact with Mount Holly police investigators and is waiting for lab results to return from evidence taken at the scene where the body was found. He would not elaborate on what type of tests were being run. Calls to the Mount Holly police were not returned.

“It’s really hard for us to continuously think about my sister’s killer and what he did,” Pavel Yarmolenko said.
