If earthquakes are part and parcel of the Japanese pysche then they are ready to react with no fear or panic they know inherently what to do , it is borne and bred into them .
I have lived through two (both minor ) and found them deeply disturbing as there is absolutely nothing I could do

I have a vague memory of an earthquake when I was a young child.
Never known one since.

Both happened when I was on leave and both happened early morning I was very frighthened .
There is a sense in these events that it is way - way out of your control
