So a hybrid really shines in stop and go dense urban traffic. thanks to regenerative braking, which recovers the kinetic energy as you approach a stop sign or red light. The same happens going up and down steep hills.
Yep... my car, a 2016 Honda Accord 2000cc DOHC engine gets an average of 24.4 kilometers per liter (57.3 miles per gallon). But I've found a way to improve that to 27.7 kilometers per liter (65.1 miles per gallon) by performing a downshift as I'm coming to a stop. When I shift downward, the engine spins faster which also directly converts into faster charging and thus pushes the average MPG upward to boot.
Ever since I found out that little trick, I always downshift before I'm coming to a stop or have to slow down too.
Edited to add: Your friend's Prius' 80MPG was probably catalog printed mileage. My Honda catalog printed mileage was 31.2 kilometers per liter (78.3 miles per gallon), but I've never been able to attain that mileage regardless of what I did. I think that's the maximum it's ever done under the exact perfect conditions like downhill on a straight stretch with no wind, etc. I think the average for Prius' are around 63MPG.

So it's not like a diesel electric locomotive, but a drive train and transmission is present connecting to the engine as well.
I was thinking a true hybrid just had the engine tied to a generator, and then that split power to battery and a motor per wheel like a pure electric.
That's how the diesel electric locomotives are set up. The engine does not have a direct gear train connection to the wheels, but is connected to a generator. This cranks out several kilovolts and a few megawatts, somewhere around 3,300 horsepower, which then feeds the big motors that drive the wheels.
But they don't have a battery. They have a huge resistor bank in the top of the locomotive to dissipate braking, by reversing part of the motor windings to act as a generator, and that is then just turned into a lot of heat.

They are ignorant. Which is why it’s all going to fail unless they get some sense.

It’s already to a point where people can’t afford or can’t get fossil fuels to heat their homes.
