I’ve used a cheap one and the science is very simple.  It picks up on nails which are found on studs, and a light blinks.

I can manage that even WITH a stud finder.  Hmmm, must be the wrong kind of stud finder!  LOL

Doesn't work on many Japanese structures. They use dovetails and wooden pegs on numerous structures without any metal nails.

That looks very solid but yes, then a stud censor wouldn’t work.
