I voted NO.

I had a US bank account when I was in the US, but it was never tied to a checking account.

When I joined the Navy, I transferred all of my funds to the Naval Credit Union bank, but that too, did not have a checking account with it.

As such, I've never used a checking account in my life.

I have, however been stiffed out of $25 from a supposed friend of mine in the Navy when the check bounced and when I attempted to follow up on it, the guy closed out his account and I'm still stuck with a bounced check from 1979 that I cannot cash. Luckily, the amount is only $25.

Neither personal checks nor cashier checks can be used in Japan. Japan does not use checks. Corporate businesses can use what is called a Kogite which is slightly similar, but it's not personal and only issuable by valid corporations.

All of my payments over the past 44 years have been through either credit card, bank transfer, other E-money systems or cash.

Do other countries use personal checks?

The U.S. does and it’s been common until recently. The last time I used one I s a store the clerk didn’t know what to do with it. But I had no choice as they didn’t take my credit card. He stood there holding it up to the light has if he was looking for a clue.  I decided then if I went back I’d use cash in the future.

LOL...

It reminds me of several commercials I've seen recently in Japan.

A famous TV personality calls up or walks into a restaurant saying he wants to reserve 34 seats for a big party. The restaurant is overwhelmed in assisting him because it would be a big meal. But the guy asks whether he can use E-money... and the restaurant says "No"... only cash... then the TV personality says alright then... I'll go elsewhere.

It was a sales pitch for restaurants to go E-money, but that was the gesture of the commercial.

That’s funny but it seems backwards to fear a commercial to restaurants rather than toward consumers.

I hear a lot of younger people saying they have never made out a check. This seems bizarre to me, but I can see why it might be possible never to write out a check. But I still think it is good to have as a backup method of payment.

I used to pay more bills by check, but with the pandemic, I paid more online. I still pay by check if I don't want to share my credit card information with a business or am otherwise leery of paying online, but then one would be sharing the bank account number. At least it isn't electronically transferred though.

On the other hand, I can remember from when I was younger when checks were used much less, however, rather than credit cards payments were made more with cash. People would get paid by check and immediately cash the entire amount at the bank. A lot of bills could be paid at the grocery store service desk using cash. A check might be needed for mail order or a large purchase or something, but a money order could easily be purchased at a bank or the post office for those infrequent events.

I have never written out checks for over the counter purchases, too cumbersome for one thing, but what sets me even farther apart from the mainstream is how much I use cash currency for many purchases. I love the self-service checkouts and I can drop my pennies and nickels into them.

Paying with cash is rare today. Checks are almost nonexistent.  I used to write out every bill by hand in a check, but a lot of places don’t want them anymore.

Not as far as I am concerned. Although dealing with cash with a human is becoming more and more difficult. I like the self pay machines where I can find them.

Paying for things like utilities, cable, taxes, medical payments, etc. by mail usually isn't a problem for me when paying by check, if I want to pay that way. Mail is another of those rarities now.

Yes people don’t mail letters anymore either.
