Could be. I knew someone who required everyone take their shoes off before entering. I haven't been back over there in about 5 years.

Custom mostly. It's in a nice neighborhood that doesn't have dirt, just pavement, concrete sidewalks, and little lawns.

Although due to proximity to other, less affluent regions, stray dogs and such probably do deposit stuff for people to step in.

In Japan, it's been a long time traditional custom that you do not wear your outside shoes inside of the house.

It’s common here. A lot of people don’t wear shoes. It’s not something I could do since I have pets.

Yes, many Asian countries.

I have plenty of fur-kids also.

Shoes and stuff are required in my place, for one's protection.

Funny, yes.  I have had a sharp toe scratch a bare foot. Especially if that sharp toe is jumping at the same time.
