Got a granddaughter starting college this month.  Wife and I worry about her safety.  any suggestions regarding self defense while she would be walking around campus, eg: perhaps a spray, a loud noise maker, etc.................

Butch - congrats and good luck to her.   Maybe wear a t-shirt "I Have Covid 19".   :)    Seriously - where's she going?  Big city?   My daughter is going up to Boston eventually....her best defense I'd guess are same old same old - but still seem to be smart prevention:

Primary to reduce likelihood of confrontation: Stay with a group or escort when possible.  Reduce unnecessary risks.  Be aware; stay in groups/daylight etc.

2ndary if confronted:

Body Camera

Tracking App on her phone.

Whistle

Pepper Spray

Gun if allowed.

The threats aren't new - she's (and my daughter) new to the threats.

The best weapon is between her ears.  Give her a copy of Jeff Cooper’s principles of self defense and a book called “Facing Violence” by Rory Miller...they will create a simple awareness that will help her avoid trouble before it comes to her, and aid her in escape should it come her way.

Her college ought to have some basic self defense classes she could take. Something kara-tay or ju jitsu based. If not from the college, perhaps from an off campus business. My daughter did this (at her father's strong insistence) when she started college 8 years ago. At a minimum, it helps with their basic self-confidence

What Hax said.  The best self-defense is situational awareness and staying out of dangerous situations.
Other than that, I would recommend a pepper spray mace combo.

My daughter just finished 4 years of college in Boston. She's grown up on Maui and although she has travelled quite a bit, I was surprised at what a bumpkin she was about situational awareness. After my first visit I put my credit card on her Uber app and told her to use it anytime. Especially after dark. Got the whistle and pepper spray to make myself feel better. All your advice is solid.

A punch knife is always good to have too.

Pepper spay, never drink anything given to you or that you sat down and left for a minute, and nothing good ever happens outside your room after 1 am.

Thanks to everyone  for good suggestions which I will go over with her. I will also get her a whistle and spray.

As to your specific question, bogeysbgone,  she is going to LSU.

Congrats. Big enough town to have to pay attention.   My cousin graduated from there in the late 80s.   He loved that school.  Was a quantitative business analysis guy - although I doubt he remembers much of college - he's got a bunch of degrees and is now a college professor in Alabama. :)  .  I even know the LSU fight song b/c he sang it so often -   Go Fighting' Tigers...  amazing alumni.   I hope your granddaughter has a great time and wish her lots of luck - it's been a challenging year for grads in 2020 - but challenges are good for character.  :)
