During the Pacific campaign, a young Marine basically fabricate this frankenguy dubbed the ANM2 'stinger'.  It was an aircraft .30 cal machine gun, converted to use by troops on the ground.  The guy in the video built a working replica and it's COOL!

No way man.  That thing was our equivalent of the German MG42...very high rate of fire, and yet very easy to shoot and use.  I do think it is so cool how these guys in the field 'invent'/improvise weapons to fit the roles they need.  There was a Marine in Afghanistan that fashioned a back pack ammo carrier/feed device he cobbled together using various parts for helicopter mounted Machine guns...was very cool...guy was able to carry like twice as much ammo as he could with his regular gear.
