The planetarium is do much fun! The Zeppelin was cool but I also like the stars. I've always loved the stars. Apparently loreficent has some kind of sparks in the mouth trick that I haven't been able to replicate. Maybe it's a portland thing...

Yeah, looks like Friday now for rain. Just read the Clackamas County Fire is now 3% contained. 1 Million acres burned here. That’s a lot of trees and land. So, yesterday afternoon and this morning before I left I noticed a significant amount more birds in my yard. Like a lot more. I stopped after work tonight and got another feeder to put out. I have 2 and leave all my perennials that are going to seed for them as I love watching them in my garden (so do the kitties from the window!) but I think with all the birds being pushed out of the burning areas they are gonna need a little more support. I also read an article that despite the hazardous air quality, the Vaux Swifts have returned to PDX on their migration. That is a big festive deal here. There is a school with an old smoke stack that the Swifts roost in every night for a month or so. It is one of the most fascinating and beautiful things to watch! Folks bring picnics and dogs and kidS and sit on this hill and watch them swirl and swoop and dive. Then...this magical signal, heard or felt only by them happens and they make this almost tornado like formation and swirl above the stack and all of a sudden they go down in for the night. It really is a magical and fascinating sight. Audubon Society has counters there and for the past several years the numbers have grown to this astronomical amount of birds that cram into and roost in that smoke stack every night. I’ll see if I can find a video to post a link. It is totally worth watching. Anyway...they are here! So...life is going on and this is hopeful, yes? It brings me joy to hear about these things. The steady and dependable and surviving and thriving things that are happening. So good.
So do you wear a suit in the pool now with the cool water? And another Hurricane. Wow. Is Jackson still loving on his pelt? So adorable that visual. Dogs are so funny with their stinky things! That left over dinner sounds yummy!
Yes, the Vet said they are busier with lots of pets with symptoms form the poor air. AQI back up over 400 again. I also hope that going in with your fur babies at the Vet isn’t a thing of the past! I know they like us there with them and don’t understand. Poor things. Last time I took Calvin though I was last one of the day and the Vet came out and got me and brought me in the back door with him. I was happy about that. He is doing good! Maybe he will see 19. I’d sure love that as he is pretty special.

Those rains coming may have some lightening too, so, may be a mixed bag. Hopefully not. It’s supposed to have been in the upper 70’s low 80’s this past week but smoke has made it quite cool. The things you don’t think about till it is happening. Still got crickets going strong. Can’t sit out and listen or keep the window open at night though. I’m gonna put on an N95 and walk down to John at least. Will be good. Yeah, I heard that too about the equivalent to smoking but can’t find out how much time out there equates to how much.
Ok...you ladies have a fine night! I won’t smoke but am gonna walk some, so same thing to some unknown extent. Not nicotine though so am not gonna worry about it!

Ok, so here is a shorter video of the Swifts. It is really cool. Of course they gather for a couple of hours before and there is often a Coopers Hawk or Peregrine Falcon or two hanging around and that always riles the crowd. There are other videos of them catching a Swift or two, but who wants to see that? Anyway...check it out! Pretty cool and relaxing when you spend the evening there with a little picnic, bottle of Booch and just watch them gather and swirl... and eventually roost.

That's an awesome video of the swifts and the hawk and falcon. I love bird watching and in Toronto Ontario we have starlings that fly in swirls but I've never seen where they roost. That school chimney needs to be made an historical site so that it never gets torn down. It's great to see that type of magical majestic phenomenon. It's sad to see them leave as we know winter is on the horizon.  Keep up the great job of NOPING every day and conquering your addiction. Life truly is better as a successful quitter. relaxed

Thank you Debbie!

Yes, the chimney is now dedicated for the Swifts. There was a project some years ago to build a new heating system for the school so this chimney has now “gone to the birds” as they say. The right thing to do in my opinion since we’ve destroyed their natural roosting sites of old growth stands. It’s quite a sight to see for sure.

While I have you...a huge thank you to you for sticking around for all of us newbies. You are a force to be reckoned with in your quit and bring so much inspiration and courage to this board. I gobble up everything you write when you pop on to lend a hand to folks as I find a lot of encouragement with your wisdom and down to earth advice. It is just great to have you folks some years out now stick around and hold your hands out to keep us going, and it is very much appreciated!

Here is an article that tells a bit about the renovation to keep the chimney a safe place for the Swifts.

Cheers to the NOPE!

Forgot to mention that in the background of that video you can see Mt St Helens, which blew her top in 1980 and lost something like 1300 feet.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I am so thrilled that those birds have a caring community to watch out for them. It really is amazing!

I am also glad to read that my words have helped others hang on to their quits. I still remember how hard this was and I will always be greatful to people like Douglas and Still Standing Steve for telling it like it is - a wicked tough drug addiction that I must get rid of. I am a semi-retired nurse and I enjoy helping others. I am currently working during Covid to help out when things get out of control. I also want to help new quitters as I thoroughly want them to feel the freedom that I feel. Yes it sucks during the entire first year but you will find those memories of smoking fade away but only the passage of time brings this reality. I hope you continue to tell that nicotine monster to aahh shutup. Eventually he is silenced for good. Keep on NOPING, Best of luck to you and Thankyou for those great videos - you live in a very beautiful part of the United States as it is similar to British Columbia. grinning

Yes, your support helps more than you know!

It’s interesting how many folks in medicine have smoked or do smoke. Goes to show how irrational and powerful addiction is. Not just cigarettes of course. The human mind...just so complex. Still, addiction is not to be underestimated and I do think it helps to treat it as the disease process that it is. Takes some work to get the mind into healthy spaces and taming that addict voice. Ive seen Douglas here too and you all are a testament that it is worth the struggle, so one day at a time, I’m gonna keep on going!

Ahhh...BC is Lovely ! I’ve been there quite a bit and always enjoy my time there. Yes, quite similar to our part of the PNW, particularly Seattle and the San Juan Islands. So so pretty.  Your side of Canada is gorgeous too! Much harsher Winters, but those Fall colors you all have coming soon...just spectacular! It’s been many years since I’ve been to Toronto but I hope to get back one day. Every time I have those thoughts I follow them up with the thoughts of how much greater life is not smoking and how much more likely it is I will be able to do those things I’m thinking about! Yes...life is definitely better not smoking.

Hey Tiny,

Hope you are doing better today!!  Hang on there girl and sweet sleep for you tonight.

My tribe is a mixed bag of like minded girlfriends.  We eat and study books, the Bible, watch YouTube’s of interest and discuss our dreams and revelations about them.  We also bring food and have breakfast and lunch.  My house on Tuesdays.  We are not blood related but related in spirit.  It’s awesome.

They have been a real support in this quit.  Only one smokes and I take breaks with her cos I like the smell.  Yeah....as I have found out I am not alone in this.  I don’t want one, just enjoy the secondary smoke. Probably not the best thing....

Have a beautiful smoke free day

Sweet Lore,
That is so cool about the birds!!  Those clips of the swifts are fabulous!!  What interesting behavior!!  Yes, you would think they would all crush each other!!!  I am crazy about them!!!  To see what has been done to protect them and this scene is so beautiful!.  Has this happened this year yet?.?

Your garden is the oasis!!!  Double, triple the amount of birds....you have provision for them!!  Little did you know how much it was going to be needed!!!  Oh wow....that is an honor for sure.  That is really an opportunity for you to help the wildlife.  Love it.

3% contained on the clack fire.  Praying that percentage rise and it be extinguished!!!  Is that your closest one?  You said Portland proper was in better shape now?  Hope so.

So I have been doing my floors and started cleaning my grill!!  Anyone know what to use on that?  Horrible!  Tab and Jackson have been licking the drip tray.  Want to get it working again.  Has not been since the ex left.  March 19’.  I hope it still works!!

Have a restful cig free day

Peggy
