An interesting spin on a situation where NASA had to cancel a code optimization competition. The catch? The code had to be Fortran.
Of course they would have to cancel it. Since no one codes in Fortran anymore, they couldn't possibly get any candidates right?
Not so fast. The reason may not be what you expect...
I've never coded a line of Fortran, but back when I first learned that there were other languages besides Basic, it was one of those core languages that always appeared listed along with the other usual suspects of Cobol, Pascal, Assembly, C, etc.
It's nice to see it still has a niche that it is filling nicely.
