Bar association exec calls for burning of churches

Dozens of churches in BC, Alberta and the Northwest Territories, mainly Catholic, have been the victims of arson and vandalism.

The head of the Newfound and Labrador branch of the Canadian Bar Association has called for all Catholic churches to be burned to the ground.

Caitlin Urquhart was commenting on Twitter on reports of churches being destroyed in the wake of hundreds of bodies on the grounds of former residential schools in BC and Saskatchewan.

Dozens of mainly Catholic churches in BC, Alberta and the Northwest Territories have been the victims of arson and vandalism.

“Burn it all down,” she tweeted last month.

No arrests have been made in connection to any of the fires.

Another Catholic church set alight in Alberta

The incident adds to the ever-growing list of churches set on fire or vandalized across BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories that started after the discovery of hundreds of graves at former residential schools. A Peace River, Alta. church is the latest to fall victim to an arsonist.

RCMP Cpl. Deanna Fontaine said the incident happened July 3, about 11 p.m. when police received a report of a monitored fire alarm at the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church located in Peace River, 486 km northeast of Edmonton.

Corbella: Burning of churches is a crime and should be condemned by all leaders

There have been so many acts of arson and vandalism against churches in Canada over the last couple of weeks that it's difficult to keep track. The latest of at least 12 church fires in Canada took place in Calgary at about 7:20 p.
