In that study, they skipped animal trials because they weren't necessary back then.
In the end, the vaccinated infants got much sicker than the unvaccinated infants when exposed to the virus in nature, with 80% of the vaccinated infants requiring hospitalization, and two of them died.
After 2000, scientists made many attempts to create coronavirus vaccines.
Here's another reason why I don't trust them.

The only industry in the world that bears no liability for injuries or deaths resulting from their products, are vaccine makers. First established in 1986 with the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, and reinforced by the PREP Act, vaccine makers cannot be sued, even if they are shown to be negligent.

That's not wholly true. It is true that the covid vaccine manufacturers are shielded from lawsuits (but only until 2024) for allergic reactions to the vaccine. However, if they are found to be willfully negligent, then there is recourse. Also, even allergic reactions to the vaccine, even though that number is statistically insignificant, can still petition the court for compensation. It just don't come directly from the pharmaceutical companies.
tl;dr
Pharmaceutical companies are protected from liability regarding the COVID-19 vaccines. If someone has an allergic reaction or injury from one of the vaccines, they can petition to receive compensation from the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (CICP).
The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), which also falls under the jurisdiction of HHS, has a better record of providing compensation to people who claim injury from a vaccine than CICP but covers vaccines for diseases such as polio and seasonal influenza, not COVID-19.
