I always sew a piece of paper with the number on the top of every column. Then when I take (book) the column off the design wall I can sew column 2 to column one, and continue to add the columns as I go from left to right.   I often sew a huge basting stitch through all the blocks of each column, IF I'm not sewing them immediately.  That way everything always stays in the correct order.  If I'm sewing rows across, then I'll put the numbers on each block going down the left side.  It's a good system for me.
