Unimaginable, undocumented, and yet known. This is the reality faced by Indigenous communities across this country. First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, reflecting the ways in which knowledge is shared and passed on between generations, all have stories of the wrongs that were perpetrated through colonization.

The discovery of a mass grave at a former residential school in Kamloops is just the tip of the iceberg.

Many Canadians have expressed their horror, shock and sadness at the announcement that the unmarked buried remains of 215 children were discovered in preliminary radar findings last weekend at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. And we should be sad; it is horrific. But it is not shocking. In fact, it is the opposite – a too-common unearthing of the legacy, and enduring reality, of colonialism in Canada. To the degree it is shocking, it is evidence of how much learning there is still to do.

This is a world wide shame...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Members of Parliament are taking part in an emergency take-note debate in the House of Commons, days after the remains of more than 200 Indigenous children were discovered buried beneath a former residential school in British Columbia. Trudeau told the House of Commons that the children found in Kamloops and others who have “yet to be found in other places across the country, would have been grandparents or great-grandparents.”

HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Nothing was dug out to CLOSELY examine but they know everyone's age and gender?

No DNS tested either...
Even if that information was available, a forensic human identification expert said the community faces further hurdles in finding relevant DNA comparisons to identify the victims where direct descendants are no longer alive. Megan Bassendale, the director of the Vancouver-based company Forensic Guardians International, said the process of DNA analysis takes time.

Bassendale said it may require scientists to test DNA from a mother and father’s family lines to narrow down who the person could be, which is a more complex process.
Absolutely and that takes a lot of time

Awfully sad that many have seen the blunder
But nothing was spoken, I've definitely wonder
