The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands (or simply Cocos Islands or Keeling Islands) is in the middle of the Indian Ocean some 2750km north-west of Perth, and 900km west south-west of Christmas Island. This is an Australian territory serviced by flights (Virgin Australia) from Perth 2-3 days each week.  All range of hotels, scooter rentals, and guided trips are available.  These islands are truly in the middle of nowhere.

With a population of less than 600 (2009), and one airstrip, it's truly off the beaten path.  Don't expect gourmet restaurants, and the restaurants available have limited hours. The islands have more chickens running around loose than residents. Alot of effort to get there but well worth the travel.

Because of the remote setting, most residents grow their own vegetables and many pack suitcases full of veggies for their trip.

Jimmy Buffet was playing everywhere.

I took a full day guided boat trip (motor-canoes) to several of the islands.

Lots of sea turtles, tarpon fishing, relaxing can be had here. I spent a week there and travelled around by bicycle and rented moped.

It's not cheap or easy to get to for sure but an amazing place if you're wiling to spend the effort and time.
