I guess version numbers were too complicated...  And beside, you could easily tell if you were up to date.

First Intel dropped them (Pentium rather than 80586), then Microsoft (ME, XP, Vista) only to bring back version numbers with 7, but begin a new trend by skipping 9, which seems to be catching on - even Apple skipped the iPhone 9.
