Is this the part being discussed here? I have a 2004 Vstar1100 Silverado and noticed this cover is just loose / rattling around.

It's good information here. Mine is obviously disconnected and just rolls around. It kinda bothers me having it that way, I'm just not sure about the prospect of tearing the whole back end down to remove it and inspect the u joint. Overall the bike is in really excellent condition. I suppose I know the right answer and just don't want to admit it :)

The cover being loose isn't a indication of a broken mid shaft. But it is a good idea to check and stake if it hasn't been already.

I just took mine off a few years back.I have to put clear finger nail polish on it to keep the rust down.
